New York City public schools are cutting back on everything--including books. I teach 12th grade English in a small public school. Most of our students are on the city's free-lunch program, and our budget has been cut drastically.

I have only twenty copies of Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," but I have 55 seniors. The novel fits perfectly into the 12th grade English curriculum, and just as importantly, it is one that the students truly enjoy reading.

Cuckoo's Nest is the perfect modern text to prepare my students for the literature they will experience in their college English classes. As teenagers, they will appreciate the story's colorful characters and dark humor and they'll be able to connect to its themes of authority and oppression. This grant would pay for every student to have one.

Your help will ensure that my students have enough books to take Cuckoo's Nest home in order to read and re-read this complex and entertaining text.
