My Students

Can you imagine what it would be like to be able to discuss your favorite book with students in another state, or even another country? Students at this school would like to make their dream a reality.

I am the Library/Information Specialist at a Middle School in South Carolina.

The area where this school is located is what might be classified as a retirement/tourist area. Tourism is the main industry in this area and with the economic downturn the past couple of years the unemployment rate here has risen. In addition, families who came here to work in that industry when the economy was stronger have experienced job loss and/or their homes. There is a total of 44% of students at this school who receive free or reduced lunch. Although we are a relatively new school, our building was completed 4 years ago and we are fortunate to have computer labs for the students to use, but we do not have the funds necessary to provide the additional tools needed to maximize use of the computers. For example, we have PhotoStory downloaded on our computers in the labs, but we do not have microphones for students to be able to record a script (a key element in making documentaries).

My Project

My students need 8 Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headsets to create digital projects and communicate globally. By providing sets of microphones with headsets, my students will be able to create podcasts, documentaries, voice-threads, and Skype with students, globally or locally. This type of interaction provides students with an opportunity to share learning experiences and to develop new skills. These venues allow the students to publish their work in formats that can be readily shared with family, friends, classmates and others. Students are excited and engaged when their learning activities have real-life applications, whether they are having a discussion about “The Lightning Thief,” by Rick Riordan, via Skype, or producing a bio-documentary about jazz musician Dizzie Gillespie.

Students will be using these headsets to learn new skills that will better prepare them for the demands of higher education.
