Meeting the needs of ALL students is an essential part of providing a well rounded educational experience. I teach special education students in grades 6 through 8. Students have a variety of disabilities including learning disabilities and attention difficulties. We are located in a struggling economic area. Many students come from low income families. Our school district is facing many financial struggles as well. We have been facing many cuts due to the state budget cuts.

All of the students I work with have Individualized Education Plans (IEP'S). Each plan is created specifically to meet the needs of each individual student. These documents identify the disability areas, academic goals, and accommodations. Many of the students I work with have a learning disability in the area of reading. Others have attention difficulties. For these students, accommodations such as having tests read out loud in all classes are listed on their IEP. Currently, we are able to read tests to students in the Resource Room. The general education teachers provide me with a copy of their test in advance. This allows me the opportunity to record the test to our network server. By doing this, students can access an audio version of the test from any computer in our district. The difficulty of this, is the fact that each classroom only has one teacher computer, with the exception of our computer lab and the resource room. If a student needs to have the test read out loud, they are forced to leave the classroom, and potentially miss instructions given by the general education teacher, to go to the resource room to listen to the test.

In order to prevent students from leaving their general education classes to have a test read, I would like to propose the implementation of a portable listening lab. I am asking for 8 Ipod Shuffles to use in this project. With these shuffles, I would be able to continue recording the tests, and download them to the portable listening device. Students would then be allowed to use the small device in their general education classroom to listen to the test being read to them. By remaining in their classes, the students would be allowed to hear any important instructions given during the test. Also, by allowing students to take their test in their general education classes, the special education teachers will be allowed to continue to keep their schedules consistent for all students rather than having to constantly rearrange their schedules around tests. These devices will allow us to have a more consistent program in which students can remain comfortable and confident while taking their tests.

We are always looking for new ways in which to help our students be successful. We are also trying to find ways in which to get the most effort from our students. The use of the Ipod Shuffle will allow students to remain with their peers and still receive the services they need. Using new technology is always an incentive for many students. These new devices will give students the confidence they need without the stigma that can go along with being separated from their peers.
