Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The power of stories is tremendous in early childhood education. I teach a kindergarten class in New Mexico. My public school is in a high poverty area. My entire school is on free lunch. I teach a bilingual, English and Spanish, program where the ultimate goal is for our students to be proficient in English and Spanish. My students are extremely bright; however, many do not have the luxury of receiving help academically at home. Therefore, everything they learn, they learn at school.

Many of my students have not had the opportunity in their infancy and toddler years to experience the joy and the power in stories and storytelling. Many of my students are experiencing stories for the first time in their lives when they walk through my classroom doors. It is an truly amazing experience to watch children become touched by stories for the first time. For many, it is the beginning of a life long connection.

With storytelling kits, my students will have opportunities to become a part of the story and create the desire to interact with literature. Having the ability to interact with the literature is crucial and of utmost importance. These interactions, or connections, with the stories are essential when they are asked to create and write their own stories. Through the use of storytelling kits, students will make connections with the stories. By having these connections with stories they will draw upon what they have read and their own stories began to take the form of these previous connections. The result is a story worth more than gold, one that is rich and solid.

Your help in this project is unquantifiable. You will provide my students with the opportunity to become solid creative writers. The potential these resources provide for my my students is truly endless. Providing my students with the opportunity to connect with stores will aid them as they become strong readers and writers. More importantly they will recognize the wealth in interacting with stories and the realization that there is no limit.
