Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

First graders need multiple opportunities to learn and ENJOY reading! I am a first grade teacher in a public school that has close to 500 students between the grades of pre-K - 3rd grade. I am one of 7 first grade classroom teachers! My school is surrounded by many small Native American villages. There is also an increasing amount of immigrants that are moving into the area because of the location. Our small town is located between 3 city's that are more expensive to live in so families find it cheaper to live in our school district. The elementary school has over 75% of its students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program which means that the students that attend school come from families that are economically disadvantaged.

My students are coming into the classroom with very little exposure to literature. Books are not being purchased at home and families cannot afford some of the new audio books that help students ENJOY reading. I can see my students' eyes light up when they are listening to the few audio books that I have in the classroom. I can see them smiling when they are able to read a book that is at their level. My classroom does not have half enough leveled readers to accommodate my students. I have no way of displaying books in a way that will be inviting for my students. I want to be able to give them books and audio books and be able to send them to a listening center where they can listen to and ENJOY the books that they are listening too. I want to fill by classroom with literature!

In order to give my students the kind of reading experiences that they deserve I will need leveled readers between the grades of Kindergarten through 2nd grade to be able to give my low readers some choices in books and to give my higher readers some challenging literature as well. The books I am requesting include biographies, science, classic tales and culturally diverse content. In order to make my classroom a reading rich environment I will need book displays for my books and big books such as a book cart to hold all the books and a smaller display for themed literature. I will need a display station to display the book we will be working on for the day. This station will help me to really dig into those books to pull out the important components of literature so that all students will be able to see and interact with the literature. In order for my students to experience audio books I will need a listening center complete with headphones, audio CD and cassette capacity and various books to listen to. This listening center should also be mobile so that it can be moved if necessary due to small classroom size.

Through this proposal I am able to do what I can as a classroom teacher. We do not get any help from our school district due to budget cuts and other "administrative" decisions. However, donorschoose.org gives me the chance to ask for help and to hope that there is someone reading this proposal that will remember what it was like as a young student to read a book for the first time on your own. I want those experience for my students. If you could see the faces I see everyday, and the personalities of the future then it would be easy for you to help.
