Here's My Story: Memoir Writing

My students need 24 copies of "The Glass Castle". My auditory learners also need the compact version of The Glass Castle on audio CD.

My English classroom is in an at-risk, public school in Wisconsin. My students meet specific criteria to have been determined to be at-risk. For example, they have had serious problems with truancy in the past or may be in group homes due to substance abuse. As an English teacher at an at-risk school my students and I face many challenges. Poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse are obstacles that have placed a majority of students below grade level in their English and Reading skills. In addition to providing intensive academic support, the staff and administration at this school nurtures students to make positive decisions that will lead to future success.

"Write what you know." Jeannette Walls Unfortunately my students "know" poverty and homelessness. These young adults have a profound understanding of how to survive with little resources or support. This memoir will let my students know that they are not alone in their struggles and that they can be successful.

24 copies of The Glass Castle will immerse these students in a true story of a resilient woman who overcame many of the situations that they face everyday. This memoir will inspire them to connect with their own life stories and use them to motivate other young adults.

Poverty, homelessness, alcoholism, and mental illness do not need to signal failure. These issues give human beings the opportunity to show the resiliency of the human spirit. You will give my students a chance to develop their identity as individuals and understand the value in their own life experiences. Writing their own memoirs will serve as a culminating project.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
