Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a first grade English Language Development class in Northern California. My school is in a high needs community with 80 percent of the students living in poverty. My students are mostly English Language Learners as well as Standard English Learners.

My students love books and are engaged readers! They have the capability of reading at or above grade level. They love to tell stories and act them out. We are missing some essential ingredients in our classroom that will most definitely boost my students' reading skills. My students are also on the cusp of being excellent narrative writers. With new materials for language arts centers, I can give them engaging new ways to practice phonics, decoding, reading fluency and all genres of writing.

My classroom is run by a centers based learning system. It provides the students with more organic experiences with their peers and their teachers. Students are able to practice reading and writing in a way that is different at every center. My kids love centers because it gives them a sense of mastery of the materials and a way to connect with their teacher in a small group. All elements of a centers system allow for students to practice and be engaged in multiple ways for their different learning styles. In order to keep my students benefiting from a centers based classroom, we need more literacy materials. I requested phonics materials such as puzzles, games, and magnetic letters. I requested specific literature sets and writing practice palettes. In order to set up centers I needed a few extra stands for each area of the room. Pocket charts will help keep each center organized and so I also requested those.

Your generosity will enable a new level of engagement for my students. Each and every student will have success in these centers because it engages them at their individual level. With these new materials I can keep learning joyful, meet student's individual needs, and build community within my classroom.
