My students need one color laser printer which will create communication boards, picture symbols, and visual aids to aid in their communication.

One picture can say 1000 words. A printer that creates 1000 pictures can show my students the world. I am a speech provider at a school for special needs students in a kindergarten class. While normally developing kindergartners are talking up a storm, these children have difficulty speaking at all. In addition, we are located in a high need community.

It is extremely difficult obtaining supplies in my school. The other staff members and I agree that our students deserve everything they can get, and we have banned together to share computers, printers, and laminating machines, which are broken more often than they are working. We do all that we can to support the current education programs of our students. As a speech provider, it is my job to make sure that my students have all the opportunities they can to communicate. I use any materials I can to create extra visual supports so that they can understand language as well as communicate their needs to others. I had a bittersweet moment after I put together a small communication book for one of my students. After only a few therapy sessions with the book, this child (who rarely engages in classroom lessons) became full of life. I imagined to myself, what would happen as I provided these visuals for all my students. It was at this moment that I realized that I do not have the supplies to carry this out. I can't even complete the first student's book.

With a color printer, I can create all of the visual supports that are necessary to aid in the communication of my students. This will benefit them in a multitude of ways which include expressing their wants and needs, increasing vocabulary, initiating and maintaining conversation with others, and overall, functioning in the classroom.

Your help will ensure that my students receive all the visual supports that they need to function in the classroom and in the home.
