Rainy Day Activites

My students need 7 yoga mats, 8 exercise bands, basketballs, footballs, 8 badminton racquets and shuttlecocks.

Kids are no less guilty of making mistakes than adults. Many of our incarcerated youth have made mistakes but spent days and months in detention centers where there is little one on one attention not to mention an extreme lack of resources. Often this inactivity, especially in the area of physical activity is counter productive. In inclement weather, we have little activity other than card games or journal writing. Physical activity is necessary and builds community and team, not to mention healthy competition. My kids range from 12-17 years old and have great potential, if nurtured. These sport/team materials would be instrumental in supplementing their day to day activities.

One of the biggest obstacles we face working with incarcerated youth is idle time. We are required to have class 250 days per year and are in desperate need of contained outdoor and indoor sports equipment. Team building in a healthy environment is productive and can supplement an often depressed and challenging environment for both detainee and staff. We have little supplies and try our best to make do with what we have. These kids already feel forgotten and despite our efforts to create activities for physical fitness, it can be boring if not frustrating. We could really benefit from this equipment and learn from our interaction. Authority doesn't have to be viewed as punitive. Teachers bond through collective physical fitness activities, and the students appreciate being included in the team effort.

Once again, we have no equipment and these balls, outdoor games, mats and physical fitness equipment would really supplement our curriculum and their lives.

Many people feel that incarcerated youth are in some way different from the so called "normal" kid. What they don't realize is kids are no less vulnerable than adults in making poor choices. The difference is that many of them had few role models or chances to have positive influences and direction. This is a challenging and trying position but if we can instill in our youth the importance of not only caring about themselves but others in the community, we can make a difference. We need support from donors who believe in what we as educators are doing, is vital. Your support with this equipment will truly benefit both the kids and those who work with them. Thank you so much.
