Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Fluency has been proven to directly correlate to students comprehension. I teach third grade in a high-need community with many second language learners. These students lack the vocabulary needed to be fluent readers.

Since my students come from a low socio-economic background and from homes where no, little, or broken, English is spoken their skills in using and understanding the language are limited. They do not hear English used correctly at home, therefore they do not speak it correctly, and then find it difficult to understand when it is used properly.

Reading aloud offers students the opportunity to hear proper English. They also hear how good readers and proper phrasing sounds. The resources I need include 25 student copies of "From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" and an audio copy of the book. By reading along and hearing the book read aloud they will be exposed to important vocabulary. They will also hear excellent modeling of fluency.
