Engaging Math Manipulatives

My students need math manipulatives, such as a magnetic kit for the white board, an overhead timer, and a problem solving kit for centers.

I teach second grade at an elementary school. The school is wonderful because it is tucked into a large neighborhood that allows the students to form a loving community with one another inside and outside of the classroom. The school strives to support all students and also reaches out to others in the community.

Learning about math needs to expand beyond sitting at a desk and using paper and pencil. I want to use these materials to allow my students to engage in what they are learning in math and become active participants.

I have asked for three different types of math manipulatives to use during our math time in the classroom. The first is a magnetic kit that has everything from base ten blocks, to pattern blocks, to coins, with everything else in between. I can use these materials in whole group and small group lessons to allow my students to visually see what we are discussing and learning. Then, they can actively come up to the board and move the pieces around to demonstrate new problems or to explain their thinking. The next item is an overhead timer. This tool would work great to help keep students on task while they are working in small groups during math. Watching the timer count down would help them to stay on task. It will also work wonderfully for our timed fact tests. The last item is a problem solving kit that we can use in one of our math centers. This kit has multiple games that challenge students and give them the necessary tools to practice and solve the word problems that so many students struggle to understand.

Your help will ensure that ALL of my students are given the opportunity to learn and participate in math. They will each have the chance to engage in math problems that are visual and hands-on to increase their knowledge and comprehension in many different areas. Plus, I can use many of these materials in small groups to reteach with those students that have fallen behind. So, your donations will also help to make sure that EVERY student in my class is given the opportunity to learn on THEIR LEVEL.
