The Write Stuff

My students need 3 dry erase markers each, for use during seat work time. They also need a variety of dry erase markers to use while showing their work at the board. Two large pink erasers per student are also necessary for correcting errors while writing with pencil.

It is difficult to get off to the right start when you do not have the proper tools to write! I teach second grade at a K-8 school in a large urban school district. We have many families that are considered low-income. We also have a fabulous program for English language learners. This program has made us a focus school for many new students that have emigrated from third-world countries.

Our funding sources are minimal and our families do not have the economic resources to support the overwhelming supply needs of their young ones. Many of the families at our school have four or more children. In the beginning of the year, we begin with a modest stock of supplies. They need to be replenished by mid-year and there is no more money available. We adopted a new math curriculum that is making a big difference in our students’ number sense and mathematical abilities. The new curriculum relies heavily upon using dry erase markers and white boards to allow students to show their work. The dry erase markers dry up quickly and are extremely expensive to replace. Second graders are also beginning their journey into neatness and proper spelling. This journey involves many corrections. We have high expectations, so our erasers never seem to last long.

We need 3 dry erase markers per child and a variety of dry erase markers for showing work at the board. We also need pink erasers to allow students to make the necessary corrections to their paper and pencil work. If we were to receive these resources, our students would be able to work with the math curriculum as it was designed for the remainder of the year. They could show their work on the whiteboards freely without worrying about using the markers as little as possible so that they do not dry up. Mistakes can be made and corrected without the fear of using up an eraser. Having the freedom to explore math concepts individually and learn from our mistakes, will help our scores soar!

You have the power to help my students grow as learners. The proper supplies can make or break a learning experience!
