Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students deserve the very BEST. I teach 10th-12th grade students in Trigonometry, Math Analysis, and Calculus, classes essential to college acceptance. All are difficult courses for students to master, especially when my students have been under-served since the start of their schooling. My students come from low-income homes, many with only one or no parents. They are born with little social capital and are often underestimated by our society. My students work hard - given the chance, I know they will make a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE in our world.

With only an old computer in my classroom, it is often difficult to expose my students to technology. They love seeing animated graphs in 2 and 3 dimensions, and demonstrations using mathematics software. From these, they gain a deeper understanding of the math and we are able to have class discussions. Additionally, we have a document projector that we recently received from a previous DONORSCHOOSE proposal, but are unable to use it without an LCD projector. Recently, to our great disappointment, the only LCD projector we had access to was stolen.

To really engage my students, and exposed them to the necessary technology to prepare them for college, I am in need of an LCD projector. The projector will allow me to show HUNDREDS of Algebra and Calculus in Motion animations, access a MULTITUDE of Internet resources like Java, Geogrebra, and Geometers Sketchpad, along with the many other online tools available. Furthermore, it will allow me to utilize CREATIVE PowerPoint presentations. Additionally, with an LCD projector, we will be able to use our document projector (ELMO) which will help my students to develop public speaking skills and become comfortable expressing ideas as they share their work with the class. These skills are ESSENTIAL to success in a college classroom. Access and familiarity with technology is so important to our students and their futures in college, and extremely valuable in the classroom.

Your financial support will make a HUGE difference in the educational experiences of my students. This is an opportunity to EMPOWER under-privileged young people and CREATE powerful learning experiences for them. Our classroom will become a more accessible, creative space that truly FACILITATES their learning. Instead of leaving these low-income youth behind - YOU will be providing them with the learning tools to become critical thinkers in this rapidly changing society.
