Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Preschoolers are curious by nature, they love to experiment with anything we provide them, be it small tiles or glitter and glue. I am a preschool teacher and my explorers are 3 and 4 years of age. My students are English language learners in a school that serves primarily low-income families.

Preschool students constantly need new and exciting learning opportunities. Our school year started in September and to this date we still have the same three tubs of purchased play dough. Everyday students make their way to use this play dough. We vary the items they can use with the play dough, but the play dough does not change. We have three colors- pink, purple and orange and the smell is not very pleasant. Wouldn't it be nice to have a variety of colors? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to add food coloring to watch the colors change as you mix the dough? Wouldn't it be nice to have fresh, soft play dough infused with a variety of scents from vanilla to lime? My students already love to play with the play dough we have in our classroom, but I want to provide them with more. I want to offer them the opportunity to make their own play dough. I want to offer them the opportunity to measure, heat, stir and create their own play dough in just the right shade of the color they choose. We however do not have the funding to purchase the items necessary- this is the reality we must face.

My students would need an electric hot plate, safety goggles, and the ingredients necessary to make play dough. Ingredients include flour, oil, salt and the most important ingredient: cream of tartar. Being able to provide these resources will empower my students. They will learn to read a recipe, to measure ingredients, to safely heat and stir, and finally to enjoy their product.

Your help will allow my students to experience feelings of empowerment, wonder, joy and amazement. Making play dough is not just about the end result, with your help it will be about the process as well.
