My school is in a very rural area of Georgia. We are a Title I school full of bright, wonderful children! I teach music to grades PreKindergarten through 5th grade.

My students love nothing more than to bang on a drum! Making noise is always fun, and for them it is so much more fun on a drum...the larger the better! It will hook their attention, which can sometimes be challenging with young children, and will be something I know that they will look forward to every music class. I am requesting 3 drums so that every child will have a place to sit at a drum, and that no one is excluded from the activity.

I would plan to use an activity at the gathering drums at the beginning of every class time. We would have circle drum time, giving us the opportunity to work on various music skills like steady beat and rhythm while also enhancing meaningful life skills like teamwork and cooperation. Studying musical rhythmic concepts is also a very close step to language skills. I use a lot of books, poems, and stories in my classroom. We often will take a poem and transfer the words to beats to perform; this gives me a chance to integrate concepts like rhyming words, syllables, and even parts of speech into their music time. The gathering drums would give us another outlet to use to make the most of our time together.

I am so lucky that I get to spend every day making music with children! With your help, I will be able to provide my students with another fun opportunity to enhance their music skills, language skills, and social skills all at the same time. By gathering around the drums together, we will truly be making music "together".
