It's a Small World After All! Bringing French to Life in Ohio

My students need an LCD projector to watch news from French-speaking countries, do interactive travel simulations, and view authentic images and websites.

Please help to bring the world to rural Ohio! We live in a small, high poverty, rural community. I teach French to grades 9 through 12.

As a rural community, we are not often exposed to the languages and cultures of the world. I already have the technology to attach a computer to a TV screen, but it is far too small to show anything but photographs and images. An LCD projector is not in our budget, however, this technology will help to expose students to culture and language that would otherwise not be available to them.

The best way to make students interested in language and world cultures is to make what they are learning real for them. With the Internet, PowerPoint software, and image projection, students could observe and relate to the French-speaking world, both by connecting with the similarities they may observe, and by remarking cultural differences. As an AP preparatory program, it is essential to provide students with a maximum of authentic reading and listening activities. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers great online resources for language learners, and we can also watch news feeds from several different countries online. A successful AP program will help students get university credits and bring down the cost of higher education. Authentic and engaging real materials will also hook the lower level students and hopefully push them towards taking higher-level French and getting AP credit.

Please help to support technology that will bring the French-speaking world to rural Ohio students. The goal of this project is to create an authentic language learning experience, to make note taking easier, and to facilitate earning AP credits. It's a small world after all...and every small contribution will be greatly appreciated!
