Internet Based Physics Labs, Part 1

My students need an opportunity to complete interactive online physics simulations and labs. I am teaching five sections of physics to 11th and 12th graders in a high-need community public high school. This is a large inner city district with many funding challenges and my students need more access to the Internet to prepare themselves for college.

Many physics topics we cover deal with assumptions such as a frictionless environment or a vacuum that cannot be easily tested or demonstrated in the classroom. There are numerous excellent resources on the Internet, many free of charge, that allow students in lab groups to simulate and test new and relevant hypotheses.

If we had enough computers for each lab group to have a computer, starting with this one, groups of 3-4 students could work together to complete simulations and labs. Some websites we could use include the Colorado pHet simulations, Hyperphysics, and Explorelearning.com. We would still complete many labs using hands-on materials, but these simulations can really expand the student's knowledge. It will definitely help prepare them for college when more and more projects and labs are completed online.

I have the Internet connected to my classroom but have only 3 computers to use with the students. With class sizes between 25-35, we complete labs in groups of 3-4 students. My goal it to obtain enough computers so that each lab group can use a computer to complete online physics labs and simulations. My students are behind on their use of computers to obtain and produce information, and the wealth of internet physics simulations available will help them prepare better for college.
