I teach high school English to students in grades 10 through 12. Our low-income community lost several major businesses in the last six to 12 months. Many of our students are from low-income families, and some have gone from a two-income family to a one-income family because of the lack of job availability.

The obstacle my students face is a lack of a complete set of books. Right now, we currently have 25 copies of the novel Breaking Point. We need more copies so students can take the books home. Last year, students had to read at school and could not take the books home because there were not enough copies. Students became frustrated because they were not able to read at their leisure or their convenience. They had to read in class or in the library. Some did not have enough time to finish the reading and really would have benefited with their own copy to take home.

By providing each student with their own copy to take home, the students who need extra time or who have other priorities during the school day can take the book home if they do not finish the reading in class. The current sophomores I teach are really starting to enjoy pleasure reading, and that is something that is really lacking among teens today. I would hate to have to cause them frustration because we do not have enough books to go around.

This book deals with a teen, Charlie, who manipulates another teen, Paul, into doing many negative and illegal activities. Because the Paul seeks acceptance and friends, he decides to get involved with these activities. With the extra copies of this book, you as a donor will really provide the students with an opportunity to learn that the decisions they make come with consequences. They will learn that they need to think about the consequences before they act. This book is a high-interest book that almost every student can personally connect with. Almost all teens seek acceptance. Almost all of them make a decision or two that might get then in trouble. This book will allow them to see the mistakes Paul made and hopefully help them see the problems that could arise if they choose incorrectly.
