Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Me? Teach reading??? As a "seasoned" music teacher, I never thought that I would have my own reading class. My elementary school has teamed up with a literacy professor from a local college that has done a great deal of research about literacy. Our school needs this help because we have a growing number of students living in poverty and more students that need to become fluent in English.

Our school has created a special morning intervention period that targets students that are below grade level in reading. A huge number of my colleagues are helping to make this possible. Staff members are pulling small groups and working for 30 minutes each day on specific literacy skills. Testing data has been collected, and it is showing that this program can greatly help children. As a non-reading teacher, I lack some of the materials that would make reading easier.

My students need 3 word games, magnetic letters, and alphabet stamps. This term, my students are working on identifying words. Many of the skills we are working on are things that students had difficulty with in previous large group instruction. In a small group, games will help motivate us and get us actively participating.

Help make learning fun. Many of my students do not enjoy reading because it is something they struggle with. I want to help create readers that read for LIFE.
