"Show your work!" This is the key in the middle school math classroom. This is the one thing most students don't want to do.

Many students just plain refuse to show how they solve a math problem. They want to just be able to write the answer. We have many low achieving students, who need to repeatedly see the steps required to do a math problem. Individual white boards are alright, but we have a lot of students who tend to doodle more than work when they have a dry erase marker.

A document camera could help with this challenge. By having each student in the room working on the same problem on a piece of paper, we can send students up one at a time, or step by step, up to the document camera to show what they are doing on their paper. This is going to force some students to actually start participating in class and showing the correct steps for a math problem. Even if a student goes up with a wrong step, everyone can still learn from this by seeing what not to do and/or figuring out where someone else went wrong. To figure out where someone went wrong, you have to understand how to the work in the first place. No matter where the students is in the process of learning how to do the math problem they can benefit from this process.

Your help will give my students more of an incentive to want to do their math work properly. This the chance for each student to see how their peers are doing the same work they need to do.
