Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Beach, birds, hills, hiking, animals, wind, sun. It’s all in a day of a third grader’s life – when they get to go to the Headlands Institute, that is. It’s a wonderful place for environmental education. I like to bring my predominantly “English learner” students (many have a different home language) there to explore the outdoors and learn about the environment. Usually, my third graders like to spend more than the allotted time in the marine biology lab where they can touch a starfish or sea anemone. One year they marveled at the two-inch long baby octopus which became prey for a hermit crab. Outside, they can hike and explore. In past years, some observant students found a newt or spotted some animal tracks. Mallards might waddle by or pelicans might fly overhead. They turn serious when they use observation skills to sketch an animal of their choice – a quail, mountain lion, fox, seagull, or one of the many (taxidermy) animals. It’s a special chance to get up close to real animals, albeit stuffed. Beyond the buildings is an eighty-foot long whale skeleton – a lesson in anatomy, measurement, and the enormity of a sea animal. Ocean foods from around the world, accompanied by a huge world map, will have them saying, “I’ve eaten that” or “My family makes that.” My students are from a variety of cultures and I appreciate any field trip connection they can make with their own lives. Many students have not had the chance to venture farther than their neighborhood. The Headlands Institute provides an opportunity to hike along the lagoon or view the ocean. For some, it’s their first visit to a beach. They feel the thrill of being high on the cliffs and rewarded with a spectacular view of the ocean. I hope my eight-year-old students can experience this wonderful place. The educators there make it inviting, fun, and informative while teaching them about stewardship of the land and our environment. There’s an excitement to learning out in the wide open spaces. As Richard Louv wrote in Last Child in the Woods, I don’t want them to have “nature deficiency disorder” but to see the earth and the environment as a wondrous place to explore, respect, and regard as their own to protect. I’d welcome your participation in making this trip a reality.
