Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Promoting social and emotional well-being for young middle school girls through reading. Reading that will offer therapy based on the given selected literature. I am currently a school social worker in a middle school. I service many students who benefit from small group therapy for social skills training, social emotional support and the special education population. Recently I have been approached by many young girls, mainly 7th and 8th graders, with an array of emotional needs. These young women experience many emotional difficulties such as self-esteem, cultural demands as young women, self-injurious behaviors, peer relationships, and temptations of alcohol. More than half of the school population are of low socio-economic status. Many of the students are on free or reduced lunch. In addition, a majority of the school population is the first generation of immigrant parents.

This is my first year as a school social worker, and I have been given very few supplies to work with these young women and the needs they have presented. Besides the emotional needs that these students present, they face some academic difficulties too, specifically in the areas of reading and math. Due to family dynamics and other demands in the home, reading is given little to no emphasis. As a result, the students' interest in reading is affected. I believe that bibliotherapy can serve two purposes: provide emotional and mental support and promote reading.

My students need copies of various high-interest books related to problems teenagers face in order to begin bibliotherapy. Bibliotherapy is a great way to promote reading to students, as well as provide social and emotional learning. Students have shown an interest in reading when they are able to relate to the material and the characters in a book. I would like to implement bibliotherapy as a school strategy to offer counseling to middle school groups of young women. In this group I hope to motivate students to use this literature to share their own experiences as they relate to the books being read. Specific topics I hope to cover with these books are self-injurious behaviors, eating disorders, drugs, cultural differences, bullying and healthy peer relationships. I believe that bibliotherapy is a powerful tool that will not only allow the students to relate to others' experiences but will also inspire them to read.

In conclusion I would like to restate that resources such as books are very essential to the growth of students. Both in an academic and well-being aspect. The goals of using bibliotherapy are to help the student plan a constructive way to problem-solve, provide a way for students to find motivation to read and to develop a sense of support in which they are able to relate their experiences to that of the literature. These goals can only be attained with your generous donation. You will make an immense difference in the way that students perceive reading. This will lead to emotional well-being as well as academic success.
