Mrs. Deacon Harrison Park School
Portland, OR Grades 6-8

I teach 6th grade at a low-income Title One school during the school year, and continue enrichment classes for 3rd - 8th graders in the summer. My students are extremely diverse, but do not have the supplies available to explore different forms of art and art theory. Our school has a very limited supply of art supplies beyond the basics of construction paper, scissors, and glue.

I am constantly integrating art lessons and crafting opportunities into core curriculum every day. Believe it or not, students actually beg for new project assignments related to the content they have learned because I am constantly encouraging them to express themselves artfully. Unfortunately my students only receive 45-minutes a week of art instruction from the art teacher, thus my goal is to teach beyond typical classroom crafts and move into the theory and history of art. In addition, for as much as we can do with paper, glue, and scissors - we are limited by our lack of supplies, and by the middle of the year, even many of those basic supplies are used up.

My classroom needs quality markers, drawing pencils and erasers, and drawing/art books. Everyone remembers how much a new set of markers or colored pencils inspired them to spend hours experimenting with their new tools. I want my students to have the opportunity to utilize art quality materials, not just basic elementary schoolhouse supplies, and produce pieces that go beyond traditional "cut and paste" craft projects to express themselves.

I was to use this enthusiasm to increase and encourage the theory and technique beyond just coloring pages in a book. Many early elementary students get the opportunity to spend time drawing, cutting, and pasting - but by middle school the focus is often switched to purely paper/pencil academics. Through my lessons with new materials, students will be able to see the academics in studying and applying art and art history in all subjects.
