Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a culturally diverse, high-needs community. My school is considered high poverty based on free and reduced-price lunch statistics. My class is comprised of students at varying academic levels: some have been in preschool prior to kindergarten and are able to read and write basic words. For many of my other students, kindergarten is their first academic experience. Technology has become so pervasive and essential in society that students must learn how to use computers at an early age. Furthermore, technology can be used to engage and support even the most reluctant learners, since many instructional materials available on the web are flexible and interesting for students at all levels. Many of my students do not have access to a computer outside of school and while we are fortunate at my school to have two computer labs and ample lab time, we are limited in how we can use the school computers. Each class at my school is allotted 20 minutes of lab time daily, but the 20 minutes must be used to take tests or play specific games which our school site has purchased. There are many games available online that are perfect for kindergarten students. These games are designed to increase students' reading abilities, phonemic awareness, sight word recognition, math skills, and logical thinking. These games are ideal educational alternatives to other games that are available for children on the internet. If we had two Hewlett-Packard Netbooks for use in our classroom, in addition to the two computers we already have, 4 students could play educational games at a time. This means that, at the very least, students would get to use our classroom computers one or two times a week. By making greater use of technology, my students will gain a more well-rounded education. The games that students can play on the Internet provide more challenges and more engagement for students at every level. Becoming familiar with technology is a life skill that is becoming crucial for success in elementary school, and beyond. You can help increase my students' technological skills by supporting us in our endeavor to get two Hewlett-Packard Netbooks. Your generosity will set my students on the right track to learn computer skills that will benefit them for their entire school careers. Thank you!
