I Can Orff! Can you?

My students need 3 soprano metallophones and 1 alto metallophone.

I am currently teaching K-5 music at a Title 1 school in Eastern North Carolina. This means that a large number of my 350 students receive government assistance. Additionally, many of these students are English Language Learners from Burma and Thailand refugee camps.

Orff Schulwerk is a way to teach and learn music. It is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making music first, then reading and writing it later. This is the same way we all learned our language. Orff Schulwerk happens in a non-competitive atmosphere where one of the rewards is the pleasure of making good music with others. A key component to this philosophy of learning are the special Orff melody instruments which include wooden xylophones and metal glockenspiels that offer good sound immediately.

My students LOVE playing on the few Orff instruments we currently own. In an ideal Orff classroom, each student would have his or her own instrument on which to play. The Orff instruments are designed with removable keys so that young musicians can focus on only the few notes that they may need to use for a given song. In addition, the instrument then serves as a tangible visual aid and manipulative in learning the degrees of the scale. My school is working to educate the whole child and prepare them to be 21st century learners. In addition to teaching the Music curriculum, I am trying to integrate Character Education as much as possible. I am trying to create respectful, responsible, and caring musicians and citizens. Theses Orff instruments will help to keep everyone involved in the activity. It will create an atmosphere of positive interdependence, where everyone is needed and everyone helps.

Your donation will help us achieve our goal of having 100% active participation in the classroom. With your help we can reach our goal of building a community of musicians!
