I teach in an urban middle school comprised of sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Our academic classes consist of four seventy-minute core classes and two forty-five minute electives. Art, music, shop, and gym are offered as electives to enhance math, language arts, science, and social studies. We are departmentalized by subject matter as well as teamed interdisciplinary. I teach the sixth grade science and math to students ranging in age from eleven through thirteen. Many of our students lack the funding for basic school supplies. Teachers as well as the school help out when possible. Through multiple hands-on experiences, students are engaged in writing, reading, calculation, and active communication of their thoughts and ideas about Science and Math content. My belief is for all students need to be engaged in multiple inquiry activities. With funding, inquiry could become priority within the science/math classroom provided that consumable resources are available. Being a sixth grade teacher allows me to begin the educational interest of many student in the middle school setting. Having this printer would allow them to not only create and publish works in the digital field, but take ownership of how they turn in their assignments. this would indeed take their learning to a new level... the 21st century. The theme of our project is stewardship of our environment in our school and community. As one of the main science teachers in my grade level, I have access to ½ fo the 6th grade students. In collaboration with our Media Specialist , we would like to see the concept of energy explored beginning in the 6th grade and continuing in the upper grades. Allowing the students to see the concept of stewardship during their middle school career will allow them to take ownership of the concepts being learned. This project will be ongoing, allowing each student to be a lifelong learner. Sixth grade students will explore properties of the pedosphere and design and implement a recycling plan for our school. This would require the students to research recycling, reducing and reusing of the natural resources that occur on the planet. When learning about the three “R’s” the students will explore the types of energy that can be affected by the simple act of recycling. With this computer station, the students will have access to another computer station that can be accessed throughout the school environment. My students need this netbook and software. Students will use the laptop computer to conduct research, collect data, electronically communicate with community resources, organize and present their findings. We also plan to use resources that we already have at school to allow the students to enhance their presentations with visualizations of their data.
