Presenting Published Poetry Projects

My students need a color printer in order to create their poetry books and other published writing throughout the year. We will also need the ink and paper for the printers.

I am an 8th grade English teacher in a very urban, impoverished area of Pennsylvania. This is my second year at this school, though it is my 6th year teaching, and I am quickly realizing how little is available to us for our classrooms. We are a K-8 school, which really creates a lack of opportunities for our 6th-8th grade students. I came from four years of teaching in true middle schools, and I realize that with only 2 classes (34 8th graders total) that their are many opportunities that our adolescent students do not have access to.

Poetry is one of my favorite units to teach, and the students really enjoy it as well. With the exception of a few students, our school is just over 98% African American, and I really try to tap into both the history of spoken word in their cultural background, as well as their love of rap music when we do our poetry unit. Most of my students are reading well below grade level, and do rather poorly on district and state standardized tests. Through poetry I am able to teach them not only how to write poems, but figurative language, symbolism and other literary elements. Last year we did a study of the work of Nikki Giovanni, an we were fortunate to be able to visit her at a local library through something called the "Teen Author Series". The students enjoyed reading a writing poetry, and have been asking all year when we will start this year's unit. (I always do it in Jan/Feb as a fun way to start the new year after winter break.)

When the students create their poetry books, and other published stories and essays, we have no way to print them. There is only one printer for our entire floor of teachers, it is only black and white, and it is only connected to teacher computers. With a printer for my Language Arts classroom, I will be able to focus a bit more on the "art" part of the course. My students love to express themselves creatively, and we do not have the technology for them to do so in an age appropriate manner.

With your help, my students will be able to publish their writing on the computer, learning valuable skills that they can carry with them to high school and college. They will have colorful, creative work that they will be proud to display. Thank You!
