My Students

"Why are we doing this?!" is a common refrain in high school classrooms. History and Human Rights often feel abstract to young people, especially those who haven't been given ways to understand their importance. This project will use high interest books to engage students on these topics.

My students are bright and thoughtful young people who struggle to access the curriculum presented in their classes without the appropriate scaffolds and supplemental materials.

My students have learning disabilities ranging from dyslexia to emotional disturbance. They are growing scholars whose imaginations and ideas soar when provided structure and accessible, relevant content. They are from low-income, inner city neighborhoods and most live in single-parent households. Some of the students are English Language learners, and some are in foster care. Though talented in many ways, these students struggle with reading fluency and comprehension. In many cases, they enter ninth grade with third or fourth grade reading skills. These students participate in a full-inclusion model of special education, which allows them to learn alongside their peers in a rigorous, college preparatory school in California, but with extensive, supplemental support.

My Project

The texts selected from Barnes and Noble were specifically chosen to reflect the core curriculum being taught at our school. They are meant to present context as well as in-depth analysis. They were selected with the intent of extending and deepening the access that students with disabilities have to the intersection of History and Human Rights, including immigrants rights, prisons, youth rights, and human rights situations worldwide. In many cases, these students have family who are in prison and / or who come from Central America and the Middle East. The books selected are meant to reflect those personal connections. Additionally, student access to this content will be achieved through the purchase of relevant graphic novels and CD collections.

Your support is crucial for this project for two reasons.

The first is that my students do not currently have materials that enable them to access and absorb this content. In this way, they have been deeply affected by California's budget cuts to education. Second, your contribution will offer students the opportunity to make personal connections, and to use History and Human Rights to better understand current events and how they affect their own context and situation.
