Feed The Need: Fantasy Books for Book-Hungry Students!

My students need 17 sets of fantasy books to engage in high quality conversations via book clubs.

Ms. Chen Sherman Elementary School
San Francisco, CA Grades 3-5

I am in the fortunate position of teaching reading and writing to a pair of book-hungry fourth grade classes. For the first time at our school site, we are implementing the reading workshop approach to literacy. In the short span of time since the school year has started, we've seen how this approach has fueled the hunger for reading in our students! It has been amazing! Where we used to have to twist arms to read daily, students now need to be wrenched from the books in their hands. We've determined that this is, in fact, a GOOD problem to have. They are now reading "just right" books at their level where they can practice strategies that good readers use to deeply comprehend text.

Did you know that just 5 minutes in conversation about what one reads can skyrocket comprehension? Now midyear, we are shifting our reading workshops to begin book clubs. We want to take our students out of this world through the genre of fantasy. Our students love to read with classmates and have a natural tendency to want to share and discuss stories. Through these book clubs, they will learn how to talk effectively, be taught strategies to help them understand elements of fantasy, and read with their minds on fire. So what is stopping us on this literary journey, you ask? BOOKS!!! Books, books, books! We lack sets of books in the fantasy genre at various levels for such a large number of students.

It is at this time that we humbly ask for multiple copies of 17 titles of fantasy books across a variety of reading levels.

Please help feed the insatiable need for these book-hungry fourth graders! They want to travel to new worlds with book clubs, to read, to talk, and to think deeper than ever before!
