I teach high school Biology and a Geographic Information Systems class in Alaska. The school is new and although we have good computers, we need equipment.

Although I have access to the computers and software necessary to experience GIS systems such as Goggle Earth and ArcMap, we lack GPS units to take the students outside to make real GPS waypoints to use for their own GIS projects. I want to have the students hike to a local glacier and mark waypoints at the edge of the glacier, and known ice limits carved into rocks along the trail of time.

They will be able to use plant succession to determine how long ago the glacier covered areas in the valley below the glacier. Through learning plant succession they will learn the local flora. They will also learn local geology and relate glacial retreat to global warming.

Your donation will allow my students to take their GIS knowledge and apply it on a local level, something that is necessary for students to internalize learning.
