Pennies for Learning

My students need paint cups with lids that allow pennies to be dropped in for working hard, listening, cooperating and other actions in which they are caught doing the "right thing", plastic pennies, 100's counting mats, money manipulatives, games and prizes.

I teach a special education class of 1st and 2nd graders. Our school is located in a working class area that does not meet the requirement for much state and federal aid but also does not have community support and funds needed to help these students. They are the forgotten group in the middle.

This is my second career. I am a new teacher with many years of corporate experience and child rearing behind her. My classroom is missing the hands on activities children with disabilities need to learn and succeed. Money is the one topic they are all interested in. These students have so little at home, that the chance to earn prizes, with their own money, is a wonderful motivator for good behavior and academic effort.

By integrating money concepts with behavior modification, I believe I have come up with a winning combination. The clink of pennies falling into the cups is a subtle, but powerful, reminder of the classroom expectations. They can see the jar filling up, moving towards their goal. The money manipulatives and games will allow these children to learn about money in a hands-on and fun way. A skill they will all need to master in the real world. On Friday, they will be able to convert their earnings into prizes. They will have a lot of work to do. They will count their money, using the 100's mat, exchange smaller coins for larger coins, shop and pay for merchandise, or save for a larger more expensive one. All the while learning that hard work and appropriate behavior pays.

Your support will ensure my students have the knowledge and learning necessary to succeed in the real world. A world that is hard enough for special education students as it is.
