I Am Legend. I Am Myth: Reading About Gods and Goddesses

My students need 23 graphic myths and legends books.

My 38 6th-graders love a great story. They also LIVE a great story. Their own stories of survival are worthy of being told like the great Greek and Roman myths and legends you and I grew up with as kids. My inner-city classroom is situated in a rough neighborhood where simply getting to school is like an epic journey. Everyday we discuss their battles and confrontations. In my opinion, this class has the cunning and bravery of the mightiest Gods and Goddesses. With your donation of these extremely engaging graphic novels, I would like to open up a world of timeless tales about bravery and survival. My students will be there as Perseus hunts for Medusa's head, as Hercules attempts the "Twelve Labors" and as Beowulf battles the monstrous Grendel. I want the class to experience this great literature and I also want them to find that they, too, are masters of their own destiny. They will find, with your kind donation, that they can overcome great odds and persevere. Further activities will include creative writing about "urban" myths and legends. These books will get used year after year. Thanks so much for your consideration.
