I teach 11th grade English in Arkansas. I am a first year teacher who is new to the state and to teaching literacy. My students live in a high-need community where many have not left the state or had the opportunity to experience many of life's possibilities!
Surrounded by extreme poverty, excessive unemployment, dirty surroundings, and gang violence - many of my students have pushed through these obstacles towards a better future. In a school that is threatened to be shut down because of consistently low academic performance, these students' take their classes seriously and hope to reverse the path their classmates had started to build.
With The Great Gatsby under our belt, we need to move onto a novel that can be considered "closer to home" for these students. Predominantly African American, the students have responded well to writers of their own ethnic background and similar circumstances.
The Bluest Eye offers a well written, well respected, and highly successful option for us as a class. The vocabulary is on target, as is the history, and the students will love it!
Allow my students to grasp that their experiences can turn into a powerful background. Their continued efforts will be rewarded with perspective and knowledge!
