I get to teach some great kids! High school freshmen are an adventure. They come into high school not knowing what is expected or required of them even if they think that they do know. They come into high school needing to develop skills that will make them successful in high school and will allow them to prepare for college. The freshman that I have the privilege of working with are students that are behind in school but have decided to really apply themselves. They must get back on track, graduate from high school on time by completing two grades in one year in our LEAP program, and then get into college. It is an exciting and a challenging time for everyone involved.
These kids are ones who have struggled in school and usually in other areas of their lives as well. Some have come close to giving up on school, some have low self-esteem, others come from low income families or families in difficult situations, and most have some combination of these disadvantages. Still, they are kids who want to do well in life. When you get to know these kids you know that this is true.
A vitally important thing is to teach our students to use 21st century skills and technology and that means computers. Some of them have gaming skills that adapt easily to the classroom. This means that they can build toward using computers to benefit themselves and others in the future. Many of my students cannot afford to have computers in their homes and are at a disadvantage to other students in the world. We need a document camera so that students can see color prints and graphs displayed. Something that really helps any classroom is to be able to use multi-media presentation equipment. That is to say that some students have to see it (whatever "it" happens to be) to understand it. Also, students learn well when they have to find the information and use the technology to create their own multi-media presentations. This is why my students need this document camera. It will be a great thing to allow students to see images, use interactive programs, create products that meet our learning objectives in history, and to develop skills for living and working in the real world of today.
You can know that these special kids have another chance to be successful and encouraged in school. You can know that these kids will be touched by the fact that someone cared enough to provide this equipment. Thank you!
