My students need a couch and coffee table to relax and read their required reading for the year.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Butler's classroom raised $850

One million strong! Our students are expected to read 250,000 words each quarter, totaling 1,000,000 words for the entire year. In our high-need district students are often unable to buy the books themselves due to lack of resources and opportunities.
As a result, I have built a large library of over 250 books, but now need a place for the students to relax and enjoy their books!
It has been proven through research that with reading comes a growing vocabulary and growing comprehension - something that these 11th graders will need for the rest of high school and for college.
My students, who enjoy reading all different types of literature often are unable to read after school because of working, taking care of family, and not having the time in general. I have offered them reading time during class once a week, and an open room after school, but it's not very comfortable in desks!
My community is a town of under 2,000 people in a school that is already considered in academic and financial distress. Students are constantly barraged with department of education officials, co-op representatives, and other federal and state organizations.
The students are required to pass a end of year exam in literacy to graduate high school, something that is a source of high stress for the students.
One tool we have used frequently is making reading and literature something of enjoyment for the students, and creating this quasi-competition. Students get recognition throughout the year for their completion of books and a reward at the end of each semester and year.
Having a couch, chair, coffee table, and rug would make my students have a safe and relaxing environment to come to each day. Students would be able to relax and browse books while others read quietly.
This "corner escape" offers an incentive for students to work hard (as their reward can be time in this corner) and also offers an oasis away from the chaos of high school's daily drama.
Your support on this project will not only help my students' physical comfort but also help me to drive them towards achievement in literacy.
