I am a seventh grade English Language Arts teacher who also manages the environmental friendly organization on campus- Blue Red GO Green. As a teacher, I am continuously looking for new and improved ways to bring the outside world into the classroom. This year, my students and I are trying to revamp the greenhouse on our campus. The goal of this project is to serve the youth of our community in understanding the processes of raising plants while helping to inspire our youth to become more active in the community. Our community is located in a rather small rural town near the coast of North Carolina. As well as being located near the coast, we are also home to a major military base. Our school serves a variety of families that range from low socioeconomic to military deployed families including single parent homes. We serve over 500 students of which 73% receives free or reduced lunch.

Our students want to fix up our current greenhouse and create a Program and Garden Club for our school. As part of the Seventh Grade Content Specific Writing Test, our students chose to write about the greenhouse and how they would benefit from such a resource. What is currently the middle school for our community was once the elementary school and the high school. In 1971, the completion of the new high school left us with the current greenhouse. Within the last fifteen years, the greenhouse has become overrun with weeds, insects, and broken equipment. Due to the lack of funds, our school does not have the supplies nor money to update our current greenhouse. The current building's foundation and frame is still in very good condition and we believe the building has great potential. Towards our goal, teachers will use the greenhouse to model and examine different middle school curriculum's that reflect environmental, social, and educational themes. This project will create and offer a better understanding of Science Curriculum and the effects of economically friendly lifestyles.

Our students will benefit from this project (revamping the greenhouse) because it will teach them the importance of patience and responsibility. This project will inspire and enlighten students to be environmentally friendly while also showing them the therapeutic and educational aspects of working with ones hands. Hopefully this opportunity will allow our students to discover a sense of self worth that they had not yet found in education.

If we succeed in attaining this grant, I will have proved to my students that goals and dreams are attainable. Through children's eyes, attaining a dream or a goal is one of the biggest challenges or lessons one could ever lear. The benefits of this project are endless. This project will allow our school to organize a wide range of events and activities that will strengthen the bonds between students, faculty, and community members alike. If awarded this grant, it will provide our community with a local nursery that will assist the youths in beautification projects along with opportunities for after school programs and other beneficial community services.
