Reading Workshops=College Thinkers

My students need the following 4 Young Adult dystopia novels for a reading workshop: "Uglies", "The Silenced", "The Hunger Games" and "Feed".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have the pleasure of teaching English 10, English 11 and English 12 in an urban, high-need school. While we are a comprehensive high school, we are divided into Small Learning Communities by future career interests. My students are in the Law and Civil Service Community, which includes career interests ranging from law-related occupations to teaching.

In order to get my students engaged in American Literature, I need to offer them high interest texts and concepts that they can relate to. By showing them how these novels and themes link to their lives, I can more easily integrate classic literature, such as "Fahrenheit 451", successfully. It helps boost student confidence when working with more rigorous texts. The reading workshop experience mimics an authentic literature study that the students can expect to be a part of in college. Most of my students will be first generation high school graduates and college students, so it is important that I teach them how to be successful in college once they get there.

The students will be divided into small literary circle groups, based on what text they select. All of the novels force the reader to question our current American society and examine serious social issues impacting our population today. Not only do I hope that my students will increase their reading and writing skills through this unit, but I also want them grappling with these complex issues as the future leaders of our country. By giving students choice, they will be more invested in the project and in the study of their novel. This project will help them build communication skills and the type of self-motivated learning behaviors necessary for success in college. Students will also gain confidence in an academic setting, helping them prepare for life beyond high school.

By giving to this project, you will be helping young people to feel empowered through reading and discussion. They will be better prepared for college, and for the work world. You will be helping to create college critical thinkers.
