Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a kindergarten special education teacher working with a general education co-teacher in a mini CTT setting. Our school is considered high poverty. Our students consist of general education students who were selected for the program because of their social skills and their ability to be accepting of their peers. We also have students who are on the Autism spectrum and are high functioning students with Asperger's syndrome. We utilize the 'nest' model.

We have found that visuals work best with our young students and having real photos that show the students themselves in action performing tasks has been very effective. We use photos to help break down tasks (task analysis) with everything from showing the steps in a daily routine to showing appropriate behaviors and social skills. These children are so amazed to see themselves as part of a group. It makes them feel special and helps them understand how important they are as members of the class. It is essential to also be able to use the photos in a timely manner. We use photos to help children read our schedule or locate their supplies and folders. We use photos to facilitate friendships as well. Our children on the spectrum sometimes find it difficult to realize the importance of their interaction with others, and being able to show the emotion attached to those interactions can be very helpful. We want to record this very special year in their lives. Photos of trips taken or special activities such as science fair projects or performances will be recorded and shared.

For this reason, I am asking for a digital camera that makes it easy for us to edit and select shots we need, and a photo printer for our computer so we can print the pictures in a timely manner. The camera and printer will make a great difference in the lives of our children. These will help build self esteem and awareness of self, as well as help build connections with others and with the classroom.

Your donation will make it possible for us to provide our wonderful and special children with feedback and with a tool to help foster learning and social skills, as well as build a visual record of their year in kindergarten.
