Gone With the Wind

My students need 6 windscreens, 12 straps, and 30 ties for our tennis courts to provide shade from the sun and protection from the wind.

Our campus houses eight (8) small high school located in the South Bronx. As the original school has been sliced into smaller schools, so has the budget for extra-curricula activities such as sports. To further complicate matters, each school has experienced budget cuts this year, and can expect additional budget cuts which may exceed 19% for next year. Although the campus has a wonderful track and field, and tennis courts, no one school has the resources to maintain these facilities. There are presently 7 tennis courts on campus that are utilized by all of the campus population, however they have no wind or sun screens. Students are subjected to the harsh winds for which New York is well known. Nor is there any relief from the hot beating sun. As a tennis instructor, I often worry about the effect of UV exposure, and heat stroke. My proposal would call for the installation of a wind/sun screen that will enclose the entire tennis complex. We would also need ties to install the screens, and net straps to secure the nets in place. Once the windscreens are in place, our students will be able to focus on building tennis skills without worrying about the harsh conditions imposed by the environment. My goal is to create a tennis squad that is open to every student. By doing so, I hope to unite all of the students on campus through sports; to offer promising young athletes an opportunity to participate and learn through team-work and competition; to provide a safe and supportive environment to improve self esteem; and to provide a means for students to become more involved in school-wide activities that will promote success on and off the courts. In order to make my students competitive, they need to be able to learn and practice in conditions that will not adversely impact their health. Our school cannot afford to purchase the materials we need to maintain our tennis courts in light of budget cuts. With your help, however, we can give these students a chance to play tennis at a competitive level. And with a little luck, winning games now may lead to winning college scholarships later. The lessons they learn on the tennis court will serve them well as they pursue college and professional careers and hopefully will last a lifetime. Please help me to help those most in need.
