Write to Learn

My students need the basic writing supplies and materials that make interactive writing possible, 20 hand painted pointers so they can read the writing they post around the room daily, 12 sets of magnetic letters so they can study their spelling words in pairs, 1 magnetic table top stand to hold their magnetic letters while they form sentences for their writing, 12 rolls of highlighter tape and 1 roll of correction tape so they can correct bad writing work and draw attention to good writing work, 6 large writing paper charts so they can write shared experience stories as a group, and 1 large portable writing easel with storage space so they can move thier writing materials to any place in the room that motivates and inspires them to write.

I believe children learn to read and write by reading and writing. I am a first grade teacher in a pretty large urban elementary school. Over 89 percent of the population is minority and over 89 percent of the population live in households that qualify for free or reduced lunch. The majority of the students who enter first grade have not been exposed to enough literature to support their early literacy development. The long term effects of this problem show themselves evident year after year in the State of Indiana Standardized Test Scores. For more than five years our students have failed to make adequate yearly progress.

However, this year I was afforded an opportunity to learn some dynamic new approaches to teaching reading and writing. The approach requires my first grade boys and girls to read and write for two hours or more each day. Needless to say my students are making great progress. Showing 3-4 levels of reading and writing growth in just a few months. I am using a balanced approach to literacy with my students which requires them to be actively engaged in a writing process called interactive writing. Students work in small groups talking about a shared experience. They then use a marker, chart paper and a large easel to record the groups thoughts. They use magnetic letters and a buddy spelling technique to help them figure out difficult to spell words. They use highlighter tape to draw attention to their best work and correction tape to fix the mistakes. When the piece is complete it is hung on the wall for all to read and reread with pointers in order to help the children build fluency and word automaticity.

My students have demonstrated a renewed interest in learning using these approaches. The only problem is we don't have the basic supplies and materials necessary to practice interactive writing in the class each day. I don't have an easel or chart paper my students write on construction paper clipped to a make shift cardboard stand. Their letters are not magnetic. Instead I cut out paper letters that tear easily and are easily lost because they blow off the table. My students use a yellow crayon in place of highlighter tape and white masking tape instead of correction tape. My students don't have pointers instead they use wooden dowel rods with eraser caps at the ends so no one gets scratched. While the children do not complain and have gotten very good at improvising, I believe the children would be better served if they had easels, magnetic letters, chart paper, correction tape, highlighter tape and pointers. I would fell better if I could provide them with safe and appropriate writing materials.

Your donations will make it possible for my students to participate in a true interactive writing experience without the frustration that occurs when you don't have the correct materials to do the job. Every student has the "right" to learn in a safe and well equipped environment. Your donation can make that possible for my young authors. Please help support their "Write" to learn.
