Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach math and science to 6th, 7th and 8th graders at a small, urban, public charter school. The community outside of our school is plagued by poverty, drugs and violence. Our school offers our students and their families a glimmer of hope: small class sizes, close teacher-student-parent relationships, innovative curricula, and a commitment to changing the community one child at a time.

Our school recently acquired an excellent new math curriculum, which is almost entirely computer-based. Resources are provided on DVD-ROM's, including animations, videos, Power Point presentations, and interactive student games. The laptops that we are using for this program are in need of replacement; these laptops all have missing keys or cords, and are in a state of general disrepair. Furthermore, due to the age of these computers, they often crash or freeze and then are out of commission for days or even weeks until someone can look at them.

I am requesting one new laptop computer and Microsoft Office software to go along with it. This laptop would be a central laptop used mostly by me, the teacher, for direct instruction. Having one new, working laptop will allow me to easily share information with my students via Power Point, the internet, games, video or animations. It would increase time available for instruction by minimizing the frustrating time spent on technology glitches.

I am looking so forward to really using all of the new resources available to us, and now I need your help to get the technology I need to do so! Your support will make my classroom instruction more effective and engaging. This project would significantly lower my stress level, and thus, would really help me become a better teacher.
