I am a 6th grade English and Social Studies teacher working at an amazing school where the staff and administration is super committed to decreasing the achievement gap. Our student population includes seventy percent of kids living in families whose income falls below the poverty line. Our student body is also racially diverse, composed of roughly 25 percent African American students, 25 percent Hispanic students, 25 percent Caucasian students and 25 percent Asian students. Within out literacy curriculum, students read both independent books as well as short texts (be it the traditional articles, stories, and poems, or the more directly society-relevant pieces such as advertisements, video-game reviews, ballots and their functional documents) of their choosing. When reading the short texts, students do so in small groups in chorus within which they are responsible to stop and problem solve when confused. The small group sessions create incredible learning space where kids become autonomous and responsible for identifying and addressing their interpretations, and socially engaging around ideas of interest. As this unison reading practice has developed, we’ve noticed the lower-skilled kids’ growing success with reading in this mode, and yet we struggle to help them transfer these skills to their independent reading lives. We believe that part of the success we’ve seen thus far comes from the clear expectations set in the group reading sessions; in other words, reaching group understanding about a finite text is accomplishable for those struggling, when effectively collaborating with a group. However, it is vitally important that we now teach them how to extend these skills to their own reading. To do so, we started brainstorming about how to mandate reading projects. Just like writing assignments that are handed in bi-monthly, so too could reading projects be submitted. We quickly realized to help kids investigate topics of their own choosing and to pursue their own interests, a skill vitally important throughout life, they need easy access to computers to genuinely research! In our classroom we have one barely running Dell, circa 1990, that has long been on its last leg, and the ten minute rotations necessary to get at least some kids to have a turn, is insufficient in researching productively. As such, I would like to get us a block of four computers for the classroom; that is my big holiday wish for my students. If you contribute to this, you will be contributing to improving the research and literacy skills of many middle school students. This gift is just what they need to take them to the next level.
