Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Earth Science to 10th graders, the majority of whom are either English Language Learners or learning disabled, in a low-income area of New York.

Given the language barriers and learning impediments prevalent with my students, I have found that class discussions and question/answering sessions often have very few participants. I believe this stems as a result of either shyness or lack of confidence in their knowledge of the material.

The clicker system is an amazing invention that allows students to hold remote controls and answer multiple-choice questions and/or vote on a particular issue, the results of which are sent to device the teacher holds. The beauty of this device is that it allows students who would otherwise not participate to do so free of embarrassment. It also allows me as a teacher to get an idea of how well the class as a whole is grasping the current topic.

Your help will ensure that my lessons are more engaging and student-centered. Not only will these "clickers" provide anonymity and instill confidence in my students they will also give me as an educator a better idea of how well I am teaching and how well my students are learning.
