Our fourth grade classroom is a community of learners who enjoy actively participating in their studies. Within the classroom I work with a broad range of learners from special needs to gifted students.

My intermediate students enjoy reading and they are very good at decoding the words in the text, but I have discovered that they do not always truly comprehend what they have just read. To help with this issue I have been focusing on the skill of reading fluency. As the students become more aware of things such as phrasing and intonation, their comprehension begins to improve. While these lessons are important, they are not always exciting. I want to be able to develop more active and creative fluency lessons so that the students will be engaged and learn valuable strategies at the same time.

To develop these lessons I would like to use the books "Joyful Noise: Poems in Two Voices" and "Hailstones and Halibut Bones." These books contain poems that can be read in pairs and that draw from the senses. They provide text from which to develop lessons on phrasing, looking at punctuation, intonation, and other fluency skills. The poems in the books will support struggling readers as well as provide challenge for more advanced readers. In addition multiple copies of the books will allow for small group lessons. The class set of rhythm instruments will provide a creative twist to typical fluency lessons. The students will be able to use music and rhythmic beats to actively explore the language of poetry. Students who may be unsure of reading aloud will be excited about using instruments and working in pairs. The use of rhythm instruments will also allow for creative interpretation of poetry and help me to meet the needs of my musical and bodily-kinesthetic learners. The instruments can also be used for other activities such as reader's theater productions within our classroom.

Your funding of this project will allow me to help my students increase their reading comprehension through engaging fluency lessons. Reading comprehension is such a valuable skill. If my students understand what they are reading then they will be able to transfer these reading skills to all content areas. By providing rhythm instruments and the opportunity to work together using partner reading, students who before may have chosen to watch, will be more likely to participate. The materials will meet the needs of the diverse learners in my classroom and they will discover that poetry and reading is truly music to our ears.
