Students should not be hindered because of their economic situation. I teach a small but wonderful class of 7 8th graders at a very small Title I school in rural Kentucky. These students all come from low income households. Many have never traveled out of the state. My students are incredibly capable and willing, but have been hindered by inadequate funding and resources.

The 8th grade trip was canceled at the beginning of the year due to funding. The students are incredibly disappointed. They see the difference between themselves and more affluent schools already, and this just added to the pile. They are becoming discouraged. I want to give these children the chance to feel special and important, and to see a little of the world they fear they will never get the chance to.

A 3 day guided tour of Chicago, IL would do wonders for these students. Our Social Studies class this year has raised their interest in American history. They are all very curious about our nation's history and current culture. This trip would be one they would remember forever, and learn much from. This trip would also serve as an 8th grade trip. They have survived middle school! They have worked so hard the past three years to keep up with other schools, and they deserve a celebration! After significantly raising their reading, math, and science standardized test scores, I would love to be able to give them something to show how proud we all are of them. I would also love to show them a little bit of the world and expand their horizons, as many of them have never even dreamed of this kind of trip!
