How can I get those wonderful ideas out of the heads of my students and on to paper? How can I teach students to be responsible citizens of the planet and to embrace technology? I've asked myself these questions many times! I teach Sophomore English in a high school that is only in its second year of existence, and I think I have found the answer to those questions -- a flash drive!

Students are often so daunted by the task of writing a complete paper that they procrastinate or say there is not enough time. Once they finally get started, they often find that they need to stop and come back to the piece later. If they are not working on their own computer, there is the issue of saving. If they need to work on multiple computers, there is the issue of retrieving. Once they have finished the piece there is often the issue of not having a printer that functions. Finally, once the paper is printed, that dratted English teacher makes several comments and suggestions and asks them to write the paper again!! No wonder students dread writing papers.

These problems can be eliminated or at least lessened with one small piece of technology. If each student had a flash drive assigned to them for the semester, they would no longer have to worry about starting and stopping assignments. Malfunctioned printers would not be a problem because students could print in the classroom or media center. Editing and revising papers would be much easier and rewarding for students.

Support for this project will empower students to get started on writing assignments with the comfort of knowing they can come back to it at any time. It will encourage them to work on assignments whenever and wherever necessary. It will inspire them to treat writing as a process that can be repeated and reviewed often, ultimately resulting in better writing assignments and students who can be proud of their efforts.
