I teach 6th grade Language Arts, Social Studies, Reading and Project Green in a rural school just on the outskirts of a very large city in Oregon. The school I teach at is amazing. My students come from great and loving homes of working middle to lower class families. Our school qualifies to be a Title 1 school but has yet to fill out the proper paper work. We are the town school with more of a transient population, as well as all of the English Language Learners.

A very large obstacle we are facing in our community (as well as all over the country) is a lack of supplies which tells students their family is not putting a value on education. Families are not taking the time to sit down and get prepared for school and take an active interest. Students bring this attitude to school. As educators we are coaches and motivators. We are living in a color world and to grab the attention and motivation of my students I need to present color and real life photos in my lessons. Color and photos bring Social Studies and learning alive. The old textbooks just don't do the amazing subject matter justice. Kids need to see and experience the curriculum all around them...the Great Pyramids of Giza, King Tut's Death Mask, the Great Wall of China, etc. The room must be filled with pictures of Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece and China. They must see it, experience it, learn it and love it. Many students are very visual. Having a photo gallery is an extremely useful learning tool for those students. It helps stimulate the part of their brain that retains and learns information. For the tactile/kinesthetic learner it is also a valuable learning tool. They get to hold the material

The school would really benefit from a color printer. There are so many wonderful resources and teaching strategies for teachers and students on the web that should be printed in color to be presented to the students. There are many strategies that necessitate color to promote English Language Acquisition and improve literacy skills for all learners. GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) is a teaching style targeted towards promoting successful, involved teachers and students. I choose to teach in the GLAD style. Unfortunately it is very hard without a color printer anywhere in the school. To be a strong GLAD classroom students need to see and touch color pictures of the material they are learning to inspire them, spark creativity and ideas about the information they are taking in.

My classroom is full of bright, happy, creative and amazing students. It is a wonderful place to work and learn. With your help you will make it possible for my students to bring history to life. Color provides students the inspiration and motivation to learn. Thank you so much for your thoughts and consideration.
