Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a fourth grade bilingual teacher in a Title I school. 100% of my students are economically disadvantaged and are under reduced lunch programs. I was chosen the Educator of the Year at my school due to my commitment to special education students in addition to my dedication to any other students in my class.

Research says that the most determinant factor for reading success is the timely acquisition of vocabulary. I found that to be true this year. Research also says that successful vocabulary acquisition occurs when a students associate words with different contexts, using them in real life situations and associating them to visual images. While using Rosetta Stone for my students I found an effective way to do it. In power point I create a vocabulary card that contains the word in English and Spanish with its meaning, two images, the first a representation of the word and the second a non representation of the word. Then two sentences using the word in opposite ways. It was incredible! My students loved the idea and associated the meaning of those words so easily. Sometimes during our reading time they recall either the words, the meaning, the images or all. UNFORTUNATELY, school is not able to run those printings for me anymore and the only printer available for that job is dedicated to other activities and it's been few weeks since I don't have those vocabulary cards for them. The scanner would help me better document my student's work minimizing the use of copies.

The printer I am asking for would allow me to print vocabulary cards for my students, scan their work and keep a digitalized copy while the originals would be sent to their parents, scan any needed tools for teaching and eventually print some certificates linked to their success in certain areas.

For most of my students a computer, an appropriate and well educated family, satellite TV, video games and digital learning is simply not possible. Thus, school has to be able to provide all those at some extent. As an educator that is my job. In one of my centers a student said, "Mr. C. I wish I would travel to the Paris once to be in the Eiffel Tower". It breaks my heart to realize that for some of them it would only be a dream, however, through my vocabulary cards we talk about those places and link them to real life contexts like sunsets, food, and others. Please help me educate them. I believe that an educator is the most important factor of success, however, the resources we have can help us go beyond expectations.
