My students are in the seventh grade at a public high school on an Army installation. We have a high need population, due to medical needs of students and their parents. It's often difficult to help them concentrate on their education with so many other pressing concerns at home.

This year, I purchased five copies of Secret Life of Bees, after reading it myself. My students love it. They have signed up on a waiting list in order to read it. When I find this type of interest, I want to encourage them as much as I can. I predict that many of the students, who love this book, will also love I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I can't wait to see how they respond to these fantastic, modern classics.

I have asked for books, audio copies, and a listening center. Many times, the struggling readers may be less challenged with selections that are different from the other students. I do not believe that this promotes a love for reading. Sometimes, we must build a bridge to help students access these amazing stories. Reading along with fluent, dramatic readers brings these stories to life for struggling readers.

Your donation will make it possible for me to supply copies of high-interest books about young people overcoming adversity for my students, most of whom are unable to purchase copies for themselves. You will help me, not only meet their learning needs, but also introduce the power of a great story.
