I have the honor of teaching middle school students with special needs. I loop with them for three years while I teach reading, English and math throughout their middle school careers. The advantage is that I know them very well by the time they are 8th graders. The disadvantage is that I know them 3 years. I am always on the look out for new and exciting ways to engage their learning.

Imagine having class in a bowling alley...a long narrow place that has metal walls in a hallway connecting two schools? May not seem like a big deal, but to students with disabilities it can become very distracting. We are in a converted hallway. Every time someone walks into my room they comment on the size and how we get everything done. The problem is that we have wires all over the classroom. The Internet wires are on the floor along the baseboard, the connection to the Mimio board is hanging out in front of the room. I have things taped to the walls and floor in order to keep my students safe.

In becoming a cost conscience classroom we looked at the options that would enable us to bring technology into the classroom. I was very fortunate to receive a grant to purchases a Mimio interactive which turns my white board into an interactive learning experience. Mimio makes a connection that would allow me to be wireless within the classroom. The computer would sit on a desk and there would be no wires dangling or in the way of the kids tripping over them.

You can keep a child safe from the hazards of wires all over the classroom by providing a wireless connection for us. With cuts in school funding and no where for us to move, we need to look for solutions that would allow us to use the technology we currently have to the best of our potential. Students with special needs deserve the best education. By supporting this project you would be supporting a child with special needs.
